Governmental Control
The government clearly has control of us but in how many ways? The government has been controlling us mentally, physically, and emotionally. They allow for our perception on things to become warped by large companies that support and can even fund their habits and governmental goals such as those that put out society's idea of beauty. They put out health advice that isn't backed up by evidence to keep the majority of people from reaching their full potential such as 8 hours of sleep a night. The average human being is supposed to have 6-7. Humans are also supposed to sleep twice a day which is called biphasic sleeping. Consolidating sleep and sleeping too much keeps our bodies from functioning properly and can have harmful long term effects on our bodies. Pizza has been listed as a vegetable on the food pyramid which isn't even correct to begin with. If one were to eat the amount of grains (which in most cases is process and just a lot of carbs) can end up making a person overweight over time. They may make things sound like everything is how it should be but it's not. They don't want us to live long because they want us gone. The government is hurting us more than we know.

Uglies to Book Comparison
I am comparing the book "Uglies" to the book "The Giver" because they both have similar themes of that of the "ideal" dystopian society. In the book "The Giver", the residents of the town that the giver lives in do not experience love, color, emotional depth, or even knowledge. In the Uglies, the residents of New Pretty Town have lesions on their brain that prevents them from having true original thought or very real emotions. In both of the books there are few people that have the ability to experience what true life is really like. The difference between the two books is that in "The Giver", Jonas, the main character, has to figure out whether he wants to live a true life or live around people that don't have a clue of what life could be. In the "Uglies", Tally, the main character, doesn't want to have a pretty mind and she wants to be "bubbly" meaning that she can think clearly unlike everyone else in her town. The books have two different takes on a dystopian society, one being based on beauty and one being based on having no feelings or emotional experiences but they both depict a "perfect" world in which everyone would ultimately get along.

Empathy
Dear Ellie and Sol,
I have decided that I am going run away for a while in an effort to save myself and also my new friend Shay. I have a few reasons as to why I must do this. I went to see Peris in New Pretty Town and I promised him I would soon be with him once I was Pretty. My friend Shay ran away to go to a far away city so she wouldn't have to go through with the operation. I was taken in by people running our city and they told me that if I couldn't tell them where Shay was, I wouldn't ever become pretty. I did promise Shay I wouldn't tell anyone about where she was but her promise conflicts with the promise I made with Peris before hers so I have to do what's right to Peris. I don't know if she is safe out there so I could also be saving her. All I have ever wanted was to become pretty and I will do everything that I can to be a resident of New Pretty Town. It's not fair that her leaving is affecting my life and what I want. Hopefully I will be back soon, please don't worry about me. I should be fine.
I hope you understand...
Love,
Tally Youngblood aka "Squint"

I see: Rippling water with white foamy peaks crashing onto weathered down rocks and muddy banks.
I hear: The roar of water rushing by, splashing and hurling itself past anything in its way.
I taste: Lukewarm air, freshened by the running river.
I smell: Water freshened with the minerals from the rock it has traveled though.
I feel: Cool water and the vibrations from its movement surging through the ground under my feet.

Best Friend
My best friend is Spencer Pyles and he has been for almost two years now. I met him about 5-6 years ago when we were hanging out with mutual friend in Yellow Springs where he lives. I don't get to see him too much because he is not as close and he doesn't have his driver's license but we always make time to see each other no matter what is going on. My favorite memory with Spencer is the day that we camped overnight at Bluesfest in Yellow Springs. I met, literally, about 20 of his school friends, ate amazing bourbon chicken, and listened to some great music. It was an amazing day with no worries. Spencer and I plan on getting and apartment together in Kettering if we both get accepted into our dream college which is the School of Advertising Art in two years. Spencer helps me with anything and everything and I wouldn't be the same without him. I honestly feel like he will be in my life for a really long time.

Chapter #1 - Quote
"Is it not good to make society full of beautiful people?"
-Yang Yaun, quoted in The New York Times
There are so many approaches one could take to this quote. I feel like there is nothing wrong with this quote. If somebody wants there to be a lot of pretty people then I see nothing wrong with it because people have all sorts of different desires and Yang Yuan thinks it's a good thing for there to be beautiful people. I believe that Yang Yuan believes that maybe beautiful people are also good people because they're confident and most of the time, pretty care-free. Although, if everyone was ugly, the people could easily all get along and relate. That's not even close to being as easy as a mixture of pretty and ugly people.
